Goji Berry (the berry of happiness) is the common name that has prevailed outside of China for a fruit, and other names for the plant goji berry, for example, the English name “wolfberry” derives from confusion with the name of the genus (Lycium), which fits with the word “Lycos”, a Greek word for wolf.
In the English-speaking world, the word Goji Berry has been used since the beginning of the 21st century as a synonym for “wolfberry”. The word “goji” is the accent of gouqi in Taiwan Hokkien, the official purist Chinese name of the plant, developed in the West for these wolfberry commercial products.


Goji Berry is a rich source of nutrients and amino acids. Goji Berry is considered to be one of the richest natural sources of nutrients. It contains 18 amino acids, 21 trace elements and some vitamins and minerals. It has 6 times more amino acids than bee pollen, 500 times more vitamin C per weight of oranges, more iron than spinach, and more beta carotene from carrots.

The dried seeds of goji berry (100 grams) contains a large number of vitamins: C (42 mg), B1, B2 (0.6-1.3 mg), B6, β-carotene (11mg), zinc (2mg), iron (9mg), copper, calcium (112mg), germane, selenium (50μg) and phosphorus (112mg) and E and very important for the human body inorganic potassium salts (1132mg).
The vitamin C content is between 42-100mg, equivalent to the lemon and orange content. It contains 5 unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid, alpha-linoleic acid, palmitic acid, myristic acid.
Saturated fatty acids and its essential oil consist mainly of palmitic acid (saturated), linoleic acid (ω6), myristic acid (saturated), and beta-elemol. It contains phytosterols such as β-sitosterol, and others.
